Kolkata: “So close yet so far”, is the story of yet another Indian athlete at the Tokyo Olympics, and this time it’s boxer Lovlina Borgohain, a strong contender for gold, but ended up with a bronze.
The Assam girl overcame mental and physical turmoil to reach the semis and quite expectedly a gold was almost inevitable.
She tested Covid positive last year and missed a very important European exposure in preparation for the Olympics. Her mother was hospitalised due to a kidney ailment for a long time and that took a toll on her.
However, this Muhammad Ali fan didn’t let personal downs affect her zeal. But alas, she has failed to clinch that all elusive gold losing to world champion Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey in the semis.
But there’s still hope for India – women’s hockey team, javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra and wrestlers Ravi Dahiya and Deepak Puniya – chances of gold still persist. Fingers crossed!
