New Delhi: After General Bipin Rawat passed away in a copter crash, the position of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) was lying vacant for nine months. The government named Lt General Anil Chauhan (Retired) as the new CDS on Wednesday named. CDS is India’s top military officer and leader of one of the largest armed forces in the world.
Sixty-one-year-old Lt Gen Chauhan retired as Eastern Command Chief in May 2021. Till date, he was serving as the Military Advisor to the National Security Council.
In his 40-year career, Lt Chauhan has held several important appointments and has vast experience in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast’s counter-insurgency operations.
Lt Chauhan, born on May 18, 1961, was commissioned into the Indian Army’s 11 Gorkha Rifles in 1981.
