Mumbai: Malayalam film Jallikattu has been selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars 2021. Directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery, Jallikattu stars Antony Varghese, Chemban Vinod Jose, Sabumon Abdusamad and Santhy Balachandran.

The film is based on a short story, titled ‘Maoist‘, written by Hareesh S, who also adapted the screenplay along with R. Jayakumar. It depicts a group of men coming together to stop a bull that is running wild in their village.

“The difference between man and animal is reducing. We have explored and worked on this shrinking space in the film.” Lijo had said in an interview with PTI.

This 2019 film with laudatory review critics and box office success is all set to secure a nomination for the 93rd Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category. The film was chosen out of 27 films.

Here’s a list of other movies in the line to be India’s entry for Oscars 2021 are:

  • The Disciple
  • Shakuntala Devi
  • Shikara
  • Gunjan Saxena
  • Chhapaak
  • AK vs AK
  • Gulabo Sitabo
  • Bhonsle

  • Bittersweet

Rahul Rawail, Chairman, Jury Board – Film Federation Of India, while giving the reason behind choosing Jallikattu said,“It is a film which really brings out the raw side of human beings, that we are worse than animals. Human instincts are worse than animals. The film has been depicted wonderfully. It’s a production that all of us should be proud of. The film has been shot very well. The emotions, which come out, moved all of us. Lijo is an extremely competent director. So, that’s why we zeroed in on Jallikattu.”

The 2021 Academy Awards will be held on April 25 instead of the usual second Sunday of February.
