New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs said on Thursday that UK has conveyed to India that escapee businessman Vijay Mallya cannot be handed over back to the country until and unless the resolution of a “secret legal” matter.

India has been urging UK to hand over Mallya after he lost his appeals in the British Supreme Court in May against his extradition to India to face money laundering and fraud cases.

“Now, we have been told that there is a secret legal matter and that his extradition cannot take place without its resolution… We are in touch with the UK government”, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson, Anurag Srivastava, said at a media briefing.

New Delhi has been contact with UK after Mallya lost all the legal appeals against his extradition to India.

India urged the UK to not consider any request by Mallya as there seemed to be no ground for his persecution in the country.

The UK government informed that Mallya is cannot to be handed over to India anytime soon, adding there is a legal issue that required to be solved before his deport can be worked out.

Since March 2016, Mallya, the former Kingfisher Airlines boss, is in the UK and is on an extradition warrant bail executed three years ago by Scotland Yard on April 18, 2017.
