Madrid: Barcelona forward Lionel Messi was fined $720 for taking his jersey off for paying pay tribute to football legend Diego Maradona, the Spanish soccer federation said.

Just days after Maradona’s passing, the Barcelona megastar scored during his side’s 4-0 win over Osasuna in La Liga.

And to pay homage to the legendary Argentine footballer, Messi celebrated his goal by taking off his Barca jersey to reveal the iconic red-and-black strip of Newell’s Old Boys. He then blew a kiss with both hands to the sky as he looked upward.

After the game, Messi posted a photo of his tribute alongside an older image of Maradona in the same shirt, adding the message “Farewell, Diego” in Spanish.

On top of that, Spanish officials also held Messi’s employer accountable and fined Catalan giants Barca 180 euros (AU$294) for the yellow card their main man received.

Messi and the club can appeal the decisions.
