Kolkata: Tokyo Olympic gold-medal winning javelin star Neeraj Chopra is elated at the rich haul of medals bagged by Indian para sportspersons at the ongoing Paralympics in the Japanese capital. However, he rues the dearth of acknowledgement to the stupendous show by our athletes.
In a video message on his Instagram handle, Neeraj has urged his fans to back the Indian contingent. Applauding the efforts of Avani Lekhara, Sumit Antil, Devendra Jhjharia, Sundar Singh Gurjar and others, he says, “Namaste ji Sabhiko, Kaise ho? (Hello everyone, how are you all?) We’ve seen some incredible medal winning performances by Indian athletes over the past few days in the Paralympics. I hope we give all our Paralympians as much love and support as possible over the next few days in the Tokyo Paralympics 2020.”
You can’t refute Neeraj’s observation and it’s imperative that we walk that extra mile to embolden these athletes who have braved physical impairment to reach the top.
Meanwhile, Sumit who scalped the gold in javelin doing a la Neeraj, told ANI, “The target was to touch 70m. However I’m happy with my performance (with a world record throw of 68.55m). I’m speechless right now. It was my first Paralympics. I’ve broken world record three times in just one competition.”
As of now, India’s medal tally reads – Gold – 2; Silver – 4; Bronze – 1, more in store for sure.
