NEET 2020: Here’s Why Soyeb Aftab Declared Topper Even As Akanksha Scored 720/720

Bhubaneswar: On Friday, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET 2020) result came out and soon the toppers Soyeb Aftab and Akanksha were making headlines because despite their equal marks, they were ranked different. Both of them scored 720 out of 720.

Everyone across the nation is curious to know as to why Akanksha Singh is ranked at 2 and Odhisa’s Soyeb had been declared the topper.

NEET’s tie-breaking policy takes into account factors such as age, subject-wise marks and number of incorrect answers; wherein the candidate older in age will be given more preference over the younger ones.

“Soyeb Aftab of Odisha and Akansha Singh of Delhi have both scored perfect 720 score in the NEET examination. However, as Aftab is older, he has been ranked at the top in the national ranking”, an official said.

“The ranking of the candidate is initially determined based on the scores obtained in Biology and Chemistry. Following these, in cases where the candidates cannot be shortlisted using the scores obtained in the examination, candidates are further shortlisted taking into consideration the number of answers that are incorrect, following which they are then shortlisted depending on their age. The elder one gets the preference”, explained the official.

“I always wanted to become a doctor and study at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Since there was no big coaching institutes in my town, I have to travel for four hours to reach my institute in Gorakhpur. After passing class 10, I shifted to Delhi for plus 2 and joined Aakash Institute”, said Akanksha.

Soyeb said he never expected to bag the first rank and he also wants to study at AIIMS Delhi.
