New Panels To Address Twitter & Facebook Users’ Complaints In 3 Months

New Delhi: Centre-appointed committees will now enjoy the power to review content moderation calls or takedowns by social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook. This will be prompted by the changes to India’s contentious new IT rules announced on Friday. The activists criticised the move as an effort to censor freedom of speech.

The alternative will facilitate the way for the setting up of the ‘Grievance Appellate Committees’ that will settle problems that users may have against the way these platforms initially addressed their grievances regarding content and other issues, in three months’ time, reported NDTV.

“The central government shall, by notification, establish one or more grievance appellate committees within three months from the date of commencement of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Amendment Rules, 2022,” the notification was quoted as saying by NDTV.

Each grievance appellate panel will comprise a chairperson and the central government-appointed two whole-time members. Among them, one will be a member ex-officio and the other two shall be independent members.

“Any person aggrieved by a decision of the grievance officer may prefer an appeal to the grievance appellate committee within a period of 30 days from the date of receipt of communication from the grievance officer,” the notification said.
