Kolkata: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took cognizance of the alleged Post-poll violence in West Bengal and ordered the probe fact-finding team to conduct a spot enquiry, the NHRC said on Tuesday evening.

Following the assembly elections, violence was reported from Sitalkuchi in Cooch Behar on Monday. BJP’s party office was also vandalised in Nandigram.

On Sunday evening, some unknown miscreants didn’t even spare media persons. They assaulted the scribes in Haldia.

West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi called him on Tuesday and expressed his “serious anguish and concern” at the alarming law and order situation in the state following the pinnacle of the state assembly elections.

“PM called and expressed his serious anguish and concern at alarmingly worrisome law & order situation @MamataOfficial I share grave concerns @PMOIndia given that violence vandalism, arson loot and killings continue unabated. Concerned must act in overdrive to restore order,” Dhankhar tweeted.

He also said that concerned authorities must act to restore order.

West Bengal Governor directed the police and the Kolkata Commissioner to end “senseless political violence, vandalism, arson, killings and intimidation that shames democracy”.

He also stated that the Bengali immigrants across the globe are anxious over the alarming situation of lawlessness in the state.

Journalist-turned-BJP leader Swapan Dasgupta has also appealed to the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court to take immediate action to direct the authority to stop the wave of political recriminations in West Bengal.

In the 2021 Assembly election in West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress won 213 seats, and the BJP garnered 77 seats in the 294-seat state assembly. However, due to the demise of the two candidates due to Covid-19, the elections of two seats in Murshidabad are postponed.
