Kolkata: Nikhil Nandy, a prominent member of the 1956 Indian football team that finished a creditable fourth in the Olympics, passed away in Kolkata on Tuesday afternoon. Nandy was regarded as one of the finest ‘half-backs’ the country has ever produced.
The 88-year-old legendary footballer failed to recover from the deadly COVID-19 complications. Nandy is survived by wife, a son and two daughters.
“He contracted COVID-19 in September and underwent treatment in a city hospital for around 45 days. He was not keeping well since returning from the hospital and his condition deteriorated recently as he stopped responding to treatment,” son Samir Nandy was quoted as saying by the agencies.
