New Delhi: The retail prices of onion in Chennai surged up to Rs 73 per kg which is the highest among the metro cities.

This happened as supply was disrupted due to rains in the producing areas which shot up their prices over the country as according to the data by Union Consumer Affairs Ministry.

The price of onion in Delhi was at Rs 51 per kg, in Kolkata they were at Rs 65 per kg and in Mumbai the prices were at Rs 67 per kg, as the data showed.

According to reports by Hindustan Times, the experts and traders speculate that due to heavy rainfall in southern and western regions has led to supply disruption and heavily impacted the arrival of the Kharif crop which will begin in few weeks.

Presently, the stored onion of the Rabi crop is being sold in the market. During this time, the prices normally come under pressure in the consuming areas, but due to rains it had created damage in the key producing areas which destructed the supply, they said.

According to the ministry’s data, the South and West zones have seen a sharp rise in the retail prices of onion in the market.

In the previous year, the onion prices in Chennai rose to Rs 73 per kg as against Rs 33 per kg. In Mumbai, the price rose to Rs 67 per kg from Rs 56 per kg, while that in Kolkata to Rs 65 per kg from 60 per kg.

In Delhi, the rates increased from Rs 46 per kg to Rs 51 in the year-ago period.

As a similar instance from Nashik in Maharashtra, which is the top onion producing state in the country, the retail prices shot up to Rs 66 per kg on Tuesday from Rs 35 per kg in the year-ago period.

The government also banned the export of onions last month to improve domestic availability.
