Kolkata: Former West Bengal education minister Partha Chatterjee has been arrested and remanded in Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody for two days. After his arrest on Saturday, Chatterjee was taken to the Bankshall Court and ED sought custody of Partha Chatterjee for 14 days.

However, the judge granted ED his custody for 2 days. The current industry minister was taken to the state-owned SSKM Hospital for a health examination on the same day following the court order.

After a 27-and-a-half-hour-long marathon interrogation since Friday morning, the former education minister was arrested by Enforcement Directorate officials. He was then taken to Bankshall court accompanied by his lawyer. But Trinamool Secretary General tried to contact Mamata Banerjee during this arrest but could not reach her.

Following his arrest, Partha was taken to Joka ESI Hospital for a medical examination. “I tried to contact the party leader, but couldn’t reach her,” the minister said in a mellowed-down voice. Questions have already started rising in the political circles about whether Mamata Banerjee will shield her party colleague.

According to sources, Partha’s close Arpita Mukherjee was also arrested later in the day, a day after Rs 20 crore and lots of jewellery were found from her residence.
