Political Slugfest Over Lakhimpur Exposes Opposition Fissures

ReKolkata: Has the Lakhimpur Kheri (in Uttar Pradesh) mayhem exposed the chasm within the Opposition parties? It could be harsh especially in the context of the sordid situation in the region following the death of eight including that of four farmers (if figures are to be believed) to give a political colour to the repercussions of the incident. But ahead of a number of state polls due next year including in UP and with an eye on the Lok Sabha polls three years down the line, making a political capital out of the condemnable turn of events is in every party’s plan of action.

A game of one upmanship is evident among parties especially the ones not in accordance with the ruling BJP. On one hand, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee basks in the fact that the team she deployed to express condolences to the families of the deceased, managed to reach the disputed place without any hue and cry. On the other hand, the Congress party which seems to have run out of favours with TMC, complains of a tacit BJP-TMC understanding which gave access to a regional party (TMC) to the bereaved kin much to the chagrin of the rest.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was detained on her way and her brother Rahul was initially barred from sharing his grief in person. This runs contrary to the silent TMC mission that disrupted the aspirations of the rest without creating a hullabaloo.

Though eventually, the Gandhi siblings along with some members of their coterie managed to meet the families of the victims yesterday, they would be nursing a grudge for not having been able to speak to the bereaved families before. And add to it, the relentless effort of other Opposition parties to reap the political benefits out of the dastardly act allegedly at the behest of union minister of state Ajay Mishra and his son, Ashish.

What is a disgrace is the unabashed political slugfest resorted to by the two primary stakeholders (Congress and TMC) of a Federal Front against BJP at the national level. But politicians are shameless as they aim at taking an unassailable lead over one another displaying cheap vote-bank tactics.

One is shocked out of his wits when parties like NCP, Shiv Sena, AAP, DMK and others jostle to use Lakhimpur as an electoral plank. It’s a sorry state of affairs and shame on our leaders who leave no stone unturned to smell an advantage at the expense of humanitarian values. But politics being politics, fissures within the parties which envisage a broader front against the ruling party at the Centre are all a naked truth.

In one sense, it’s BJP which wields authority in both the state and the centre that can use this lack of understanding among Opposition parties to its advantage. It could sound weird as it is the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP dispensation in the staye that is drawing flak for abject inaction, but infighting among its political foes is actually turning out to be a blessing in disguise for the saffron party.

It is unfathomable how instead of speaking in unison, parties rivalling BJP are lashing out at PM Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh CM Adityanath driven by specific agendas. And it is an irrefutable observation whether you like it or not!
