New Delhi: Will it or won’t it? The speculations are over – Bypolls for the Bhabanipur Assembly seat in Bengal to be contested by West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee will take place on September 30, the Election Commission of India announced today.
The counting will take place on October 3, EC stated. The poll body also declared bypolls to two other constituencies in West Bengal – Samserganj and Jangipur and Pipli in Odisha.
The last date of nomination is September 13, and candidates can withdraw by September 16.
However, bypolls for the 31 other Assembly seats have been put on hold due to the pandemic. Banerjee who lost the Nandigram seat to the BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari in the Assembly polls has to win the Bhabanipur seat to continue as CM.
Banerjee has been facing jibes for being a non-MLA chief minister from the Opposition mainly the saffron party. Now, it’s her turn to turn the tables. BJP is planning to field actor Rudranil Ghosh against Didi.
