Kolkata: President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered their condolences over the death of noted Bengali cartoonist Narayan Debnath.
The creator of popular Bengali comic characters, Bantul the Great, Handa Bhonda, Nonte Fonte, Bahadur Beral etc., the 96-year-old Debnath passed away at a Kolkata hospital after prolonged illness on Tuesday morning.
“Sad to learn about the demise of Shri Narayan Debnath, a noted cartoonist, who created immortal fictional characters that entertained children and adults alike. His passing is a big loss to the world of Bengali literature. Condolences to his family and admirers,” said President Kovind.
The Prime Minister also expressed grief on Debnath’s demise. “Shri Narayan Debnath Ji brightened several lives through his works, cartoons and illustrations. His works reflected his intellectual prowess. The characters he created will remain eternally popular. Pained by his demise. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” PM Modi said via a tweet.
For a long time, Debnath was suffering from age-related ailments, which included kidney and heart issues. The West Bengal government shouldered the responsibility of his medical treatment and expenses.
