New Delhi: Former Jharkhand Governor Draupadi Murmu has been named as the BJP’s Presidential candidate. Murmu, an Odisha tribal, will contest against former Union minister Yashwant Sinha. Sinha has been named as the opposition candidate on Tuesday. If voted in, the 64-year-old will be the first tribal woman to be the President of the country.
Jharkhand’s first woman Governor, Draupadi Murmu began her political career as a councillor and later became the Vice-Chairperson of the Rairangpur National Advisory Council.
She was elected legislator twice from Odisha. Murmu also served as a minister in the Naveen Patnaik cabinet when the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) ruled Odisha in alliance with BJP.
