New Delhi: Hearing author-turned-politician MJ Akbar’s defamation of sexual harassment in October 2018 case against journalist Priya Ramani for the past two years, the Delhi court said that it does not have the jurisdiction to continue with it, on Tuesday, following which she was sued by him.

A circular from February 2018 says that court can only hear cases filed against MPs or MLAs, and not by them, said Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Vishal Pahuja, on Tuesday.

Akbar still remains a Rajya Sabha MP of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) though he had quit as Union minister after allegations against him came out during the #MeToo movement.

“As per the Supreme Court’s directions [from November 2017], only matters filed against MPs and MLAs can be listed before the Rouse Avenue court”, said Pahuja.

Most of the hearings have already been taken place, including the final arguments.

The judge, Sujata Kohli, listed down the matters for hearing before the district and sessions judge of the Rouse Avenue court on Wednesday at 10.30 am.

She will pass an order on whether the case will continue before Pahuja.

Ramani made the allegations about an incident of sexual harassment by an renowned newspaper editor in an article in Vogue India in 2017.

In a series of tweets, she identified Akbar as that editor in October 2018 during the #MeToo movement. After this, around 20 more women accused Akbar for sexual assault over years during his journalistic career.
