New Delhi: Pusarla Venkata Sindhu has decided to withdraw from Thomas and Uber Cup in Aarhus, Denmark, citing ‘personal reasons.’
However, she will send her entries for the two events of Badminton World Federation (BWF) Super 750 Tour events in Odense in Denmark which is scheduled to be held after the completion of the tournament.
Ramana Sindhu, PV Sindhu’s father said, “She will skip the Uber Cup because of personal reasons. As of now, she will send her entry for the next two tournaments, and later decide on participation,” was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
After Sindhu’s withdrawal from the tournament, the Badminton Federation of India will find it very difficult to form a team of 10 players in each men’s and women’s categories, while most them are yet to start training. Saina Nehwal, who has been training separately, is the only top player (world no. 20) who is left for the participation in the women’s singles for Indian team after Sindhu (world no. 7).
The Indian women’s team have been clubbed with China, France and Germany in the Uber Cup draw. Ashmita Chaliha is the next best Indian player (world no.77) for the women’s singles.
Each tie will be having three singles with two doubles matches. The combination of Sikki Reddy and Ashwini Ponnappa (world no.28) who are viewed as the best doubles combination from India are still not training together. On the men’s side, the doubles combination of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are also not training together.
One of the national selectors on condition of anonymity stated, “The players had earlier given their consent and that is why the team’s participation was confirmed. It is the first tournament that will restart international badminton and it makes sense for the players to compete. We still have some time in hand to announce the final squad.”
Sindhu has been training separately at the Gopichand Academy since August 7. Other players such as Kidambi Srikanth, Sai Praneeth and Sikki Reddy, are currently training at the national camp of Gopichand academy.
Sixteen teams in the women’s and men’s competition are scheduled for the participation in BWF championship which will cause large huge gathering at the tournament. The BWF has issued strict safety protocols for the competition.
