Mumbai: In the case of TRP Scam, three witnesses were presented before a magistrate and claimed that Republic TV has paid them.

They told the magistrate that Republic TV paid the witnesses for keeping the channel on for a fixed time to increase the Television Rating Point of the channel.

“The executive from Bar-o-meter told me to watch Box Cinema (one of the three channels under investigation). He said I should watch the channel from 2 pm to 4 pm and I would be paid Rs 500,” the viewer told NDTV.

The witness said that he did it for two years and he never realised that this incident could be linked to the fudging TRPs or Television Rating Points.

While the fourth witness made similar accusations against Box Cinema which is a local channel in Maharashtra.

Police Commissioner if Mumbai, Parambir Singh also confirmed that three witnesses have taken the name of Republic TV’s officials in the TRP Scam.

“The statements were made by the witnesses under Section 164 of the CrPC, which deals with recording and confession of statements by a metropolitan magistrate or judicial magistrate during the course of the investigation,” police informed.

So far, five arrests have been made in the case. Among them includes a former employee of Hansa Research, have confessed to being part of the racket and making payments to households.

The BARC (Broadcast Audience Research Council) had employed the private agency Hansa for the installation of the metres.

Meanwhile, Republic TV had refused the allegations and accused Mumbai Police of Vendetta because it continuously raised questions on the investigation of Sushant Singh Rajput’s death.

Republic TV’s Arnab Goswami said, “there is “not a single BARC report that mentioned Republic TV”. “The people of India know the truth. BARC has not mentioned republic in any complaint,” he added.
