SC To Consider Death Sentence In Boston Marathon Bombing Case

Washington: The US Supreme Court on Monday said that it will consider reinstating the death sentence for Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, presenting President Joe Biden with an early test of his opposition to capital punishment.

The lower court had said the original trial judge did not secure an impartial jury for the trial.

The 2013 Boston marathon bombing, which Tsarnaev carried out with his brother Tamerlan, claimed lives of three and severely wounded 264 others. The Chechen immigrant was convicted of all 30 charges brought against him in 2015, and a court imposed six death sentences and 11 concurrent life sentences.

However, a three-judge panel from the first US Circuit Court of Appeals withdrew the death penalty sentences last July, citing errors by the lower court. It sent the case back to the federal district court.

The initial prosecution and decision to seek a death sentence was made by the Obama administration, in which Biden served as vice president.
