Kolkata: She may have been claiming innocence on her party’s alleged involvement in the violence unleashed after TMC’s convincing win in the state elections, but the Calcutta High Court’s verdict to order a court-inspected CBI probe into the mayhem caused by over enthusiasm, should give West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee a jolt from the blue.
Snubbing the state government’s attempts to wash its hands off the responsibility to maintain law and order during the polls, the court further stated, “”Civil or police administration is under the control of the Election Commission during election process only to ensure free and fair elections. That does not mean that the police stop discharging its normal duties to control law and order.”
Banerjee’s party compatriots going gung-ho on triumphing over a much-stronger BJP, may have transcended the line with vengeance in mind and if justice prevails, they will be on the mat.
Since the matter is sub-judice, comments from leaders across factions have not been that candid as of now, but leaders have started reacting.
The court verdict is music in the ears of BJP which has been at the receiving end reportedly. BJP state president Dilip Ghosh, welcoming the court decision says victims will now get justice. “What Mamata Banerjee refused to admit is now acknowledged by the judiciary,” he adds.
However senior TMC MP Saugata Roy is miffed at the verdict. “I’m unhappy with the verdict. If in every law & order matter which is entirely within State government’s jurisdiction, the CBI comes in it is transgression on State’s right. I’m sure state govt will judge the situation and take a decision to appeal to a higher court if necessary,” he told news agency ANI.
The High Court has also appointed an SIT with senior cops from the state for the investigation.
A lot in store for sure!
