Jaipur: Protests have erupted here after a 22-year-old hungry and pregnant woman was raped in the state capital, allegedly by two ambulance drivers who promised her food.
The opposition staged a protest while the National Commission for Women (NCW) took cognisance of the matter on Thursday and sought a fair and time-bound probe from the Rajasthan DGP.
According to police officials, the woman lived on the footpath in front of SMS Hospital with her husband. She went out begging for food on May 24 as the entire family was hungry. Taking advantage of the situation, an ambulance driver lured her and also invited his friend to join.
Promising her a complete meal if she stays silent, both of them took turns to rape her inside the vehicle and later dropped her near the SMS Hospital.
The police arrested both the two accused on Wednesday night, but BJP state President Satish Poonia still complained. “What kind of security is provided in the state when a hungry pregnant woman, begging for food, is raped in the centre of the city?” he asked, terming Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot’s claims that he is providing food and shelter to poor a “failure”.
The NCW also tweeted: “@NCWIndia is perturbed by the reported incident & has taken cognizance of the matter. Chairperson @sharmarekha has written to DGP Rajasthan seeking fair & time-bound investigation in the matter. NCW has also asked to apprise the Commission about the action-taken at the earliest.”
