Silicon Valley Star Sridhar Vembu Begins ‘Start-Up School’ In Chennai Village

Chennai: A Silicon Valley Star and the founder of Zoho Corporation, Sridhar Vembu who has been valued by Forbes for $2.5 billion has now decided to move to a small village to open a start-up which will provide free education and food for students.

He started his journey six months ago with home tuitions and dedicated the two-three hours of his free time to teach the children in his village Tenkasi. He says that now he has over 52 children mostly of farm labourers along with four teachers.

He is now ready to take off his ‘lockdown-experiment’ to a new level. He is planning to build a “rural school start-up” which will provide free education and food for the children. His model does not believe in marks and degrees and conventional affiliations for certificates.

“This has become a serious project. I am also doing part-time teaching. We are trying to put it together as a model now…busy preparing papers, getting necessary approvals,” The 54-year-old was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

He is also sure that his start-up will not seek affiliation with the CBSE or any other conventional educational board.

However, the challenges he had faced in the village were different after COVID-19 disease began to spread in the country.

“Practically, it was not possible for them to attend classes (online after the lockdown)…some parents had smartphones but cheap models. I had enough time, and we did some physical experiments, I taught them a little Science, Mathematics and English,” he said.

“On the ground, what I see is poverty…I noticed that kids coming to our tuition centre are actually hungry. How can you learn anything when you are hungry? That has to be sorted. I appreciate the noon-meal scheme but that is not enough,” he added.

He also said that his “school” will provide two meals a day, and snacks around 4.30 pm, before children are sent home.
