Dhaka: The gallows await six militants in Bangladesh for murdering two gay activists in 2016. A court in the country read out the death sentence on Tuesday.
The verdict has been lapped up by LGBTQ campaigners all over the Islamic nation. Gay rights campaigner, Shahanur Islam sounded satisfied, “We are happy with the judgement. At least after a long time, we get justice. But as an anti-death penalty activist, I always prefer a life sentence … instead of death penalty.”
The assassinations of Xulhaz Mannan (35), editor of the country’s first LGBTQ magazine and actor Mahbub Rabbi Tonoy (25) created huge furore not only in Bangladesh but also beyond the borders.
Claimed by Ansar Al Islam, the regional arm of Al-Qaeda, they were part of a pre planned series of attacks on atheist bloggers, minorities, academics and others.
