New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi is expected to meet party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Friday, sources told NDTV. The meeting will take place a day after the core group of Congress’s G-23 dissidents, led by Azad, discussed the way ahead for the grand old party.
The dissidents have met several times since Wednesday, peeved with the loyalists’ stance at Sunday’s Congress Working Committee — party’s highest decision-making body — meeting. The loyalists insist on reaffirming the Gandhis’ leadership despite disastrous Assembly election results throughout the country.
Party leaders had turned down Sonia Gandhi’s offer to resign from all posts along with her children Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in the last CWC meet.
However, the G-23 has been consistently seeking to restructure the organisation since it first conveyed to Sonia Gandhi in 2020 following a string of losses. The Congress lost Punjab to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and has been virtually wiped out in Uttar Pradesh and the other states.
“Only way forward for the Congress was to adopt a model of inclusive and collective leadership and decision making at all levels,” the group said via a statement on Wednesday. They insisted they want to strengthen the party and “not undermine it in any way.”
