Kolkata: India’s table tennis coach Soumyadeep Roy has been removed from his post on Thursday. Roy has been replaced by Tapan Chandra to coach the Indian team for the Tunisia Open.
Roy had a bitter fallout with star player Manika Batra, who is back in the team, during the Tokyo Olympics. India’s TT team is flying to Tunisia with 11 players including the coach.
Soumyadeep and Manika have been involved in the controversy since the Tokyo Olympics. There were allegations against Manika that she refused to take the advice of coach Roy.
On return from the Olympics, Manika was show caused. While responding, Manika brought forward an explosive allegation. She accused Roy of match-fixing. Manika further alleged that Roy had asked Manika to throw the match in Doha to give one of her students an opportunity at the Olympics.
A probe was launched into the allegations, the results of which are not yet out as the controversy has already reached the court.
“I have not received any official document or information. So, I can’t say anything right now,” Roy was quoted as saying by Anandabazar Online. The competition will begin in Tunisia on Sunday.
