New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India on Thursday issued a notice on Andhra Pradesh government’s plea seeking change in the medium of education from English to Telugu for classes I to VI.
The bench led by DY Chandrachud, Indu Malhotra and KM Joseph sought response from Srinivas Guntipalli’s on which the Andhra Pradesh government has stopped the execution of the plan in the government-run schools of Telugu medium.
The bench said, “We will consider and examine the Andhra Pradesh government’s order to make English medium education mandatory from Class I to VI in government schools,” was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.
In April, the order was set aside by the High Court to convert the medium of instruction of the government-run schools from Telugu to English. The bench will hear the plea on September 25.
K V Vishwanathan, Senior advocate who appeared for the state government, set upon the order during the hearing which was conducted through video-conferencing.
Vishwanathan said the majority of parents want the medium of instruction and communication to be in English. He said that it was a progressive and a major step to look forward following the constitution.
Gopal Shankarnarayanan, Senior advocate who appeared for the petitioner in the High Court has accepted the notice and he has to respond within two weeks.
