Kolkata: At a time when West Bengal Chief Minister Banerjee is particularly perturbed by her key partymen’s revolt and the exodus from the party, the feud within her Banerjee family came to the fore at the Bengal Olympic Association’s (BOA) Annual General Meeting at a city hotel on Sunday.
Mamata’s brothers, Ajit Banerjee and Swapan (Babun) Banerjee, were locked in an intense battle for the BOA president’s post. The fight had already gone beyond decency limits with two of chief minister’s brothers trading barbs at each other in the build-up to the AGM. The battle was eventually won by younger brother Swapan by a margin of 13 votes after much ado.
Among the total 61 votes, Swapan got 37 votes while his elder brother Ajit could only manage 24 and had to vacate the chair held by him for last eight years.
Ajit’s panel ended up on the losing side in the election to the secretary’s post too. Jahar Das from Swapan’s panel emerged winner against former Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) secretary and heavyweight Biswarup Dey by 38-23 votes.

After the win, Swapan thanked all the officer-bearers and also sought cooperation from all. He had a special mention for Dey. “We seek guidance from all and is also keen to include (Biswarup) Dey in some capacity in the running of the association,” Swapan said.
