Paris: A History teacher was beheaded in France for showing caricatures of prophet muhammad in class on Friday. The attacker was shot dead, according to the police and prosecutors.
The assault took place on the outskirts of Paris near a school in the western suburb of Conflans Saint-Honorine, said the French anti-terror prosecutors. They treated the incident as “a murder linked to a terrorist organisation” and related to a “criminal association with terrorists”.
About 600 meters from where the teacher was killed, the attacker was shot dead after he did not listen to Police for putting his knife down and behaved in a threatening manner.
The teacher had been receiving threats around 10 days ago over “a debate” about the caricatures, said the police. A parent of one of the students filed a complaint against the teacher.
But, the killer, identity remains unknown, did not have child studying at the school.
The incident is an “Islamist attack”, called French President Emmanuel Macron, urging citizens to take a stand against extremism.
“One of our compatriots was murdered today because he taught… the freedom of expression, the freedom to believe or not believe”, said President.
Meanwhile, the French government, has been working on a bill addressing Islamist radicalism with the highest Muslim population in Western Europe.
