Mumbai: The nation can never get over the gruesome Nirbhaya rape and murder in Delhi back in 2012 which shook our conscience. Recently, the brutal rape of a 30-year-old woman in Saki Naka, Mumbai, reminded us of the Nirbhaya tragedy. It sparked an outrage all over the country and raised questions on women safety yet again. Writer, producer and director Nivedita Basu still can’t believe such an assault on woman took place in a safer city like Mumbai.
“The Nirbhaya case was obviously a testimonial that north India is known to be unsafe for women. But when I heard about the Saki Naka case, I was in shock because Mumbai has been so safe for girls. It’s very disturbing,” she says.
She adds that it’s high time that rules in India needed to get stricter against such crimes. “There should not be a hearing. These criminals should just be given death penalty. Some still dare to commit such heinous crimes because they know that they can get away with them. I just hope that justice prevails,” says the director of the web series Tandoor.
Expressing further disgust and voicing for justice, Nivedita adds, “Of course we are angry and upset because many women are employed in lines of work that require them to do late nights, so should they stop working? I am also a part of one such field of work. We never really thought of any safety issues while coming back home earlier, but now we are worried and scared, so are our families.”
Now, point noted, but it is not just a question of stricter laws, a change in mindset is also the need of the hour to avert such atrocities on women.
