New Delhi: In response to Enforcement Directorate (ED) summons, TMC National General Secretary and Diamond Harbour MP, Abhishek Banerjee will face questions on his alleged involvement in the coal pilferage scam from the agency here on Monday.
Before leaving for the capital, Banerjee told reporters, “I reiterate what I had said in November at public meetings that if any central agency can prove my involvement in any illegal transaction of even 10 paise, there will be no need to hold any CBI or ED probe, I will walk up the podium and get myself hanged publicly.”
Banerjee’s wife Rujira who was also summoned in the same case, had expressed her inability to appear in person on Wednesday because of her two children amid the pandemic.
According to the Hindustan Times, the ED had told a Delhi court that Banerjee allegedly received funds obtained from illegal mining. The agency added that before the state polls, illegal coal mining was ‘flourishing in the state under the “patronage” of the political party in power.’
Both Banerjee and his aunt, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee had earlier torn into the BJP-led Centre for using central agencies against TMC after having been trounced in the state elections.
