Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has sought the details of Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee’s wife Rujira Naroola’s citizenship details from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Sources said Rujira had filed two applications for citizenship. In the plea, Rujira mentioned two different names in the column of father’s name — Niphan and Gursaran Ahuja. The agency has now asked for the details related to her citizenship to take the matter forward.
Rujira is a Thai national. Earlier in March last year, she was served a notice by the MHA over discrepancies in her PIO card and other relevant documents. The Indian High Commission in Thailand issued her the PIO card in 2010. She later applied to convert the PIO to Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI).
In the documents, Rujira had mentioned Niphan as her father. But in one of the documents, she submitted for the conversion from IPO to OCI, her father’s name is mentioned as Gursaran. The document in the question was her marriage certificate issued on February 13, 2013.
OCI holders are not considered citizens of the country and have limited rights even if they live in India. With no voting right, OCI holders also do not have the right to hold the Constitutional posts and right to any public services. They are also not allowed to invest in farmland or agricultural property.
