Kolkata: Payel Sarkar, a popular actress on Bengali TV has lodged a complaint with the cyber crime cell of Kolkata Police following an objectionable message she received from a false account of renowned Tollywood director Ravi Kinagi. The case has been shifted to the cybercrime cell of Barrackpore Police Commissionerate.
Payel had accepted a friends request from the account thinking it was genuine. But the ordeal started when she received an obscene message on Messenger preceded by an intimation that she had been selected as the lead in a film.
But much to her shock, she was informed by her friends that the account was not genuine when she posted the screenshot of the chat on Facebook.
Taken aback, she complained to the Kolkata Police cybercrime cell but the case was transferred to Barrackpore Police Commissionerate since she stays at Baranagar which is under Barrackpore.
PTI reports, “The fake account was deactivated, an official of Barrackpore Police Commissionerate said, adding that police was working to trace the person behind the account.”
“I understood soon afterwards it was not the verified account… The fake account had many inconsistencies I realised when I checked later. But I went ahead with the complaint as I want to punish those who abuse, stalk and harass women and girls on social media. I have got all the cooperation from police,” Payel was quoted by PTI.
The director has also decided to complain to the cyber cell. “I was totally in the dark about such developments till now. But I would request everyone to contact me over the phone or through my office. Not sending request to cast him/her through social media. There can be many fake social media accounts of personalities. Such things give a bad name to people like us,” he said.
