New Delhi: Mumbai Police have registered a complaint against comedian Vir Das for the ‘Two Indias’ monologue he delivered at the Kennedy Center on Tuesday.

Complainant, high court lawyer Ashutosh Dubey, who is also the legal advisor of BJP-Maharashtra Palghar District, said Das has made “derogatory statements against India.”

Sensing the gravity of the situation, Das released a statement and clarified that his comments in his monologue “I come from two Indias” weren’t intended to insult the country.

Das, currently in the US, uploaded a video on YouTube on Monday, titled “I come from two Indias”. This was part of his recent performance at the John F Kennedy Centre in Washington DC.

Das talks about the duality of the country in the six-minute video and mentioned some of the most topical issues India is facing. A section on Twitter posted clips and pictures from his monologue, specifically the part where the comedian said, “I come from an India where we worship women during the day and gang-rape them during the night.”

“There has been a sizeable reaction to a video I posted on YouTube. The video is a satire about the duality of two very separate India’s that do different things. Like any nation has light and dark, good and evil within it. None of this is a secret,” Vir Das explained in his statement.
