Guwahati: Two people, a man and a woman, are killed; beheaded and set on fire by an angry mob over doubt of practicing witchcraft in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, as senior police officer said.
The mob accused both of them to have performed ‘black magic’, causing the death of a teenaged girl in Rohimapur village in Dokmoka police station area.
Nine persons have been arrested involved in the incident after some locals reported it to the police.
Rashmi Gour, a teenaged girl from Rohimapur, named two persons from the village just a day before her death on September 29, and claimed she had fallen ill because of ‘black magic’ performed by them.
Another girl in the village also accused the two persons of performing ‘black magic’ on her on the third day after Gour’s death.
“The villagers then lynched the duo identified as Ramawati Halua and Bijoy Gour and took their bodies to a nearby hill. They beheaded the bodies near the burial site of Rashmi Gour and set them on fire”, said Deuri.
Senior police officers and Executive Magistrate, Jintu Borah, have visited the site and collected the remains from the pyre and soil samples.
A case has been filed and nine persons, including two women, are arrested and weapons have been seized, said the officer.
A team has been launched to arrest the remaining accused, added the arrest.
