New Delhi: Karkardooma Court here refused to grant bail to former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student activist Umar Khalid in a “larger conspiracy” case in connection with the 2020 Northeast Delhi violence.
Khalid was arrested on September 14, 2020, and is currently lodged in Delhi’s Tihar jail.
After hearing arguments from the counsel appearing for Khalid and the prosecution, Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat had reserved the order on March 3, reported NDTV.
The accused had told the court that the prosecution lacked evidence to prove its case against him during the arguments.
The former JNU student faces charges under the anti-terror law Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for being one of the “masterminds” of the February 2020 riots, which had left 53 people dead and over 700 injured.
As many as 18 have been named accused in the Delhi riots larger conspiracy case, but only 6 have been granted bail so far.
