New Delhi: Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Ram Vilas Paswan, who had recently undergone heart surgery, breathed his last at a Delhi hospital on Thursday. He was 74.

The minister was undergoing heart treatment and recently underwent a surgery “due to the situation that suddenly emerged” as his son, Chirag Paswan tweeted on Saturday.

Chirag took to his Twitter handle to announce the demise of his father and wrote, “Papa… Now you are not in this world but I know you are always with me wherever you are. Miss you Papa.”

He also shared a photo of himself with his father along with the post.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condoled the veteran leader’s death. “I am saddened beyond words. There is a void in our nation that will perhaps never be filled. Shri Ram Vilas Paswan Ji’s demise is a personal loss. I have lost a friend, valued colleague and someone who was extremely passionate to ensure every poor person leads a life of dignity,” Modi tweeted.

Paswan was elected in the Lock Sabha for the first time in the year 1977 as a Janata Party member. He was re-elected five times consecutively from Hajipur constituency in Bihar. He formed Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) in 2000 and later joined Congress-led United Progressive Alliance in 2004.

Known as one of the great survivors in Indian politics, Paswan has been a minister in almost all the governments at the Centre since 1989.
