Kolkata: Five members of a family from Dakshin Dinajpur district of West Bengal were found dead at their residence on Sunday, a senior police official said. The bodies were identified as Anup Barman, his mother Ulubala Barman, wife Mallika Barman and his two daughters under 10 years Beauty Barman and Snigdha Barman. They were recovered by a team of police officers around 6 am from their residence located at Jamalpur village under Tapan police station area.
According to the officer, it is not yet clear if this was a case of suicide or murder. The locals after noticing Anup’s body hanging from the ceiling of his home, informed the police.
He said that the Anup was suffering from cancer and had little or no money left for his treatment. There can be another possibility that all of them were murdered at their residence, or the 33-year-old might have killed his own family and later took his own life, he said.
The officer said, “Anup had recently sold a piece of land as he needed money for his treatment. He was finding it difficult to bear household expenses due to his failing health.”
He added, “Circumstantial evidence suggests Anup killed his mother, wife and children before hanging himself. We are still probing the matter.” The bodies have now been sent for post-mortem and further details would be available after the report arrives, the officer said.
