Kolkata: The West Bengal Government on Monday, asked state universities to conduct the final-semester college and university examinations between October 1 and 8, before the Durga Puja.
An official of higher education department, who was also present at the meeting that held via video-conferencing between Vice-Chancellors and Education Minister Partha Chatterjee, said it was unanimously decided that the final-year and semester exams would be carried out between October 1 and 8.
On August 28, the Supreme Court of India announced its decision to conduct the final-year and semester examination. It stated that states and universities cannot promote students without holding final-year exams by September 30.
However, the apex court also said that states can approach the University Grants Commission (UGC) if they cannot hold the exams by September 30.
The universities can decide how they want to conduct the exams i.e. online or offline following COVID-19 protocols.
It was also decided in the meeting that final semester results for the Arts and Science streams, which had been declared by the Jadavpur University and Presidency University on the criteria of 80:20 assessment, will not be considered valid and would have to conduct the exams as well, the official said.
The Education Department will not issue any new advisory on this issue further and it will let the universities to decide the process to conduct the exams with precautionary measures.
After the order issued by the Supreme Court to conduct exams, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “I have told our Education minister to look into the possibility of conducting the final-year exams in universities and colleges before Durga Puja in October. The options of both online and offline exams should be looked into.”
