Kolkata: Being a motormouth can be acceptable, but what if you break all ‘shackles’ of decency with your incriminating statements.
Union minister Narayan Rane, infamous for stirring rows with his actions and views, has lived up to his reputation yet again – the minister is arrested for allegedly wanting to slap Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray for the latter’s gaffe on the age of free India.
Now, if you thought this would set a trend and restrain our political leaders from going overt with their views, you could be wrong.
Some people refuse to mend their ways and if you are a person of eminence bestowed with power and money, you tend to get away despite causing consternation. In one of the world’s oldest democracies, lawmakers have often courted controversies for being foul-mouthed.
Be it our very own Mamata Banerjee or her political foe West Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh or the young and exuberant Rahul Gandhi, their unscrupulous swipes have often hit the headlines for the wrong reasons.
If Congressman Mani Shankar Iyer referred to PM Narendra Modi as “Neech kism ka aadmi (man with low taste)”, Modi loyalist and Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani called Rahul, “Gangu Teli” while Modi himself ornated Sonia Gandhi as “Jersey Cow.” Now, our Madame Sonia doesn’t lag behind too — she was not mincing words calling Modi, “Maut Ka Saudagar.”
So, none can be exonerated as some time or the other, ranting of ‘mild expletives’ has vitiated the political ambience not just in India but beyond our borders too.
But who bothers? Rane probably knows that the row over his incendiary urge will die down soon – already his party president JP Nadda smells political sabotage on the part of the ruling alliance in Maharashtra. Soon, others will rally around Rane too and who knows, he will be out on bail and the protracted case will drag on for years. Can’t blame us — we are talking from experience.
But isn’t it the antiquated norm that refuses to wane? Ghosh shows the temerity to refer to people standing in serpentine queues to avail of the Lakshmir Bhandar scheme as “beggars” and he doesn’t lament. Our lovable Mamata Didi, prone to indiscretion, has often in enrage, pelted diatribes not behoving of her status. But political acrimony can often turn extremely personal — that has always been the in thing.
So, Rane ji, do not be upset, you are just taking political degradation to places. Carry on! We are watching!
UPDATE: AT THE TIME OF PUBLISHING THE ARTICLE, RANE’S LAWYERS WERE ARGUING HIS CASE… THE LATEST IS – HE HAS BEEN GRANTED BAIL BY A MAGISTRATE COURT IN RAIGAD DISTRICT
