Kolkata: After heavyweights Sushmita Dev, Babul Supriyo, Luizinho Faleiro and Leander Paes, indications are strong that BJP Parliamentarian Varun Gandhi might also switch allegiance and join the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Varun Gandhi is likely to meet West Bengal Chief minister Mamata Banerjee during the latter’s visit to the national capital next week.
Sans any official confirmation about the Gandhi scion joining the TMC, a senior party leader said Banerjee’s visit to Delhi next week will be ‘very significant’ and she might throw some ‘surprises’ as well.
However, there’s still no clarity that the BJP leader jump the ship during Banerjee’s Delhi visit, or later.
“Leaders who are angry with the BJP, but have no way to go to the Congress, are contacting Trinamool. At the moment, it is clear that Mamata and Trinamool can play the biggest role in stopping (Narendra) Modi,” a TMC leader was quoted as saying by news agency IANS.
“Varun Gandhi cannot go to the Congress. So, he would be looking at a party that can give him a national platform. With Trinamool Congress trying to increase its presence nationally, it would also be interested to include a person who has national acceptability. And in that case, it will be a win-win situation for all,” another senior Trinamool was quoted as saying by the agency on the condition of anonymity.
