Win At Old Trafford Would Be Icing On The Cake

Kolkata: You’ve put in your best and make no mistake, Virat and boys, you deserve to end the gruelling five-match Test series on a high.

Yes, without a tinge of doubt, millions of fans would be hoping that Team India win a Test series in England after fourteen years. They may have an unassailable lead which implies by no means can they lose the series, but a victory at Old Trafford, Manchester would be the perfect icing on the cake. And to reiterate, the foot soldiers deserve it.

What a series it has been, but to assess it unbiasedly, despite a defeat at Headingley, it’s Team India which have edged past their English opponents on most occasions. There have been moments of dejection, yet the guys have hurtled back against all odds. So, no drawing the fifth Test guys, step on the gas and obliterate England.

Never before in recent times, have we seen an Indian team look so indomitable on a SENA soil (even keeping in mind the series Down Under). Be it with the bat or the ball, somebody or the other has risen to the occasion to see the team through. The pace quartet has been intimidating, the batters have delievered when required and to sum it up – team camaraderie has been superlative. Yes, they deserve to have the last laugh.

Confidence, they have aplenty, especially after the resounding triumph at Oval. The fourth Test was a turnaround that has emboldened the spirit of Virat Kohli and his teammates and it would come into play as they take the greens today at Old Trafford.

The Covid scare looming large over the final Test has fled and we are all set for action hopefully. Yet, a precautionary warning for Team India is a must – the buoyancy after the Lord’s Test was dented at Headingley, though the guys struck back at Oval. So, it’s imperative the Indian team does not let a recent history repeat itself. And never ever underestimate the home side.

Now, coming to the technical aspect – field your best team Virat. And this means, let Mohd. Shami come back into the side. No axing an out-of form Ajinkya Rahane because the team needs his experience – they say, “Form is temporary and class is permanent.”

But what about R Ashwin? Will he finally make the cut? Yes, he has to – his ‘unwarranted dilapidation’ has been jolted by a place in the ICC T20 side and the man with over 400 Test wickets would be all resolute to make a statement. Enough of faith reposed in Ravindra Jadeja, it’s time to look to the Tamil Nadu all-rounder.

Finally, a word on King Kohli. As captain, he has shepherded his team assiduously. However, by his own standards, he is short of runs – but even a nincompoop would hesitate to write him off. An ardent Virat fan prays he finally reaches the elusive three-figure mark and that too on a winning occasion. The man has been vilified of late, now, it’s time for resurgence with the willow (again by his own standards).

Toss up the coin!!
